The sad part is that Charlie Kirk and his ilk have always been a part of the landscape of this country. Hate and intolerance of the “other” is as American as apple pie. It is appealing to so many due to fear (of unknown or of some kind of loss…economic or social status) and plain ignorance and want of “control.” But for Native Americans (First Nations in Canada) we are all immigrants or descendants thereof. Some came because of tyranny at home. Some were forcibly brought here. Others came for opportunity they otherwise would not have. By the end of the Civil War, all came because of an ideal, albeit imperfectly implemented, embedded in the Constitution. To paraphrase from a soliloquy from the movie Gettysburg, “To be judged as who I am. Not who my father or my father’s father was”
