The world is full of extreme authoritarian rulers. It seems to be a trend. It can get depressing.
But before we can deal with any of them as a nation, we have to deal with our own authoritarian. Perhaps then we can develop a foreign policy that works for the interests of our people and the world.
Trying to stay positive and optimistic is hard at times, when I suffer crisis fatigue.
Thank you for your appreciation of this essay. Yes, these constant assaults on our senses are draining. Hang in there though. There is a tiny light at the end of the tunnel and it becomes a bit brighter by the day.
Please do take care of yourself. Reward yourself when possible, with your favorite activities or just quiet. It’s a must. Authoritarians use chaos and cruelty to wear us down.
I find that working around the house, or focusing on my interests outside of writing, most helpful.
Families and friends that recognize our symptoms are the best support. If you live alone, enjoyable books, movies etc. make for wonderful diversions too.
