TAT readers,
Yesterday’s TAT was to introduce a prototype journal to readers. I produce these on a time-permitting basis and my intentions are to make them available bi-annually for paid subscribers. Any that I publish until after our November election, will be free to all. With this explained, today comes an Election Special Edition. It contains varied topics but especially those that pertain to our history, values and deep dives on select topics that I believe are crucial to our upcoming election. By default, these are oriented towards voters understanding the truth about our nation and the lack of any truth at all, in MAGA ideology. Most of these are also, the favorites of the 377 published essays I’ve published over the past two years.
My biggest fear for our election is grounded in my professional core specialty of Narrative Warfare. In other words, the fact that individual group identity is the key to how they perceive the world. When that identity is “conditioned” over years and decades, to see and interpret the world and its events exclusively through the eyes of their chosen narrators, it is exceptionally dangerous. This is because they actually believe narrators like Trump, FOX and their ilk, social media posts, music, movies, TV, politicians, church leaders, etc. are telling them the truth and that everyone else, is lying.
They will believe anything but truth if those narrators tell them otherwise. This is what pollsters don’t understand and why we saw them completely wrong in 2016, 2020 and will again in 2024. The point is that more voters voted for Trump in 2020 than 2016 and it may increase again in 2024. Our republic is at severe risk should this occur and especially since the publishing of Project 2025 and the 2024 GOP Platform.
The best way to restore some semblance of reality to our communities, is to build personal resilience to fake news, conspiracy theories, lies, etc. is to rebuild our core national values. By this, I mean revisiting relevant portions of our history via learning and storytelling, role-modeling these values publicly in our daily lives, including to raise truth in those tough conversations with family, friends and co-workers, spouting Trumpian conspiracy theories. I don’t mean angry debates but thoughtful conversations that convey to them that you are dedicated to reality, truth that can be established in credible sources etc. The more people that do this, the more peer pressure on those who wish to remain outside of reality.
Today’s special edition is my way of contributing stories that are grounded in the most credible sources and that tell the truth about the threats we face as a constitutional republic. The more that we all share these truths, the more minds come into contact with it. For full transparency, I confess a love of history and government, which my father taught me along with countless students of his. Telling the stories of our founders and the beliefs which they instilled into our founding documents, is a guilty pleasure. Telling these stories against the backdrop of fake patriots attempting to replace our constitutional republic, with an autocratic, oligarchical, White Christian Nationalist and violent extremist regime, violates every principle of our republic. This would cost us all, the very rights we are now constitutionally guaranteed. It would also deny the world a leader, that represents inalienable human rights. We must not fail.
