Paul,

I am finding the media coverage (speculation?) on a pending IDF offensive against Hamas to be a cross between Stalingrad and the Battle of Berlin. Rather I think a variation on the Battle of Okinawa might be a better paradigm: locate and seal the underground tunnel entrances except for a select few exits, flood the spaces with the equivalent of military grade tear gas, and then shoot anyone who comes to the surface. It works for exterminating vermin like gophers, rats and moles.

I have no disagreement. I am actually quite concerned about the surprises that lay in store for those having to deal with the tunnel system. I am certain of safe rooms and emergency exit systems built into the complex or what they call there, the "metro." I would rather just seal up all known entrances, pump in gas and light a cigar. Either way, I'm sure that the IDF has long worked on this problem. There is an excellent BBC product that has a map of the Metro. It is included with other maps of value too. Here is the link. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-20415675

We are thinking alike on this problem set. My alternative scenario would be to pour kerosene down the known tunnel entrances and then toss in some Willie Pete grenades on time delay fuses. That should eliminate any possible booby traps. While the IDF can be taken by surprise, they do not fight stupid. I agree with your assessment on the IDF giving deep thought to this challenge.
