While you were writing that I've been poking around in Google Images looking for graphs showing the degree of polarization. What I see is that Newt Gingrich didn't cause our problems, he's just the opportunist that noticed conditions and set our current troubles in motion. The Republicans, based on their behavior rather than the public theater, have absolutely no interest in fixing this problem. They haven't legitimately won the presidency since 1988 and I greatly fear what happens when a major political party in this country expires.
